Old Ankle Injury Flaring Up? Sports Chiropractor Denver

If you have ever wondered why your right shoulder flares up in the same spot, right in the back part of your rib cage, and nowhere else, this post is for you.

The same goes for hips that never seem to loosen up, or that one ankle you rolled in high school playing basketball that has never quite felt the same since.

I am Dr. Grant Smith. I have seven years in practice, I am TPI certified, and I have treated athletes from 6 NFL teams. I see patients in Greenwood Village and Denver.

Of everything I do as a clinician, the part I value most is education. If I can help you understand your body at a higher level than you do today, it opens a door of awareness.

That door matters more than most people realize.

Why the Same Problem Keeps Coming Back

Most of us do not know a problem exists until it announces itself. When we first run into something in our lives, we are rarely aware it is a problem at all.

I am talking mostly about the chronic, long-term questions here, the ones that hang around for months or years.

If you lack awareness that a problem exists, how do you expect to fix it? That is not a criticism. It is simply how the process works. You cannot solve something you have not yet seen clearly.

Think about how this plays out in daily life. You rest the area, it settles down, and you assume it is handled.

Then a few weeks later it returns in the same spot, and you are right back at the beginning. Nothing about that cycle tells you why it happens, and without the why, the only available response is to wait for the next flare-up.

The difficulty is that most of us start from a place of little to no knowledge about how our bodies work. Then we try to figure everything out in real time, usually when the stakes feel high, because these problems tend to arrive with pain attached.

Pain Pushes Us to Rush

Pain is a very unpleasant experience. It makes sense that when it shows up, we want out of it as fast as possible. Anyone would.

The trouble is that the urgency to get out of pain can pull us away from the bigger question, which is why it happened in the first place.

Without understanding how you are moving your body and how you are handling load, you are never going to fully get out of it. The problem keeps coming back, and keeps coming back, and keeps coming back.

That pattern is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is a sign that the cause has not been seen yet.

Awareness Is the Missing Piece

Education is where a lot of the people I work with have noticed the biggest difference in their care. Understanding changes the experience.

When a patient can say, "Oh, this is why this thing keeps popping up," or "This is why this hip keeps feeling this way," something shifts.

The flare-up stops being a random event and becomes something with a reason behind it. Once there is a reason, there is something to work with.

It also explains why people are so often surprised by their own bodies. The ankle you rolled years ago, the hips that feel tight no matter how much you stretch, the shoulder that complains in one specific place: each of these feels like a separate mystery until someone helps you connect it to how you move and what your body has been asked to handle over time.

I have been fortunate to work with professional players, and I have been flown around the world for the work I do. What I have learned from all of it is that the principle is the same for everyone.

Whether you are an athlete, an executive, or someone who wants to get on the floor and play with your kids, awareness comes first.

What to Look For in a Sports Chiropractor

If you are searching for a sports chiropractor near you, whether that is in Denver or Greenwood Village, consider what the care will actually give you. Relief matters. Lasting understanding matters too.

A few questions worth asking

  • Will you explain why this area keeps flaring up, in plain language?

  • Will you look at how I move and how I handle load, not only at where it hurts?

  • Will you help me recognize the pattern, so I am not starting over each time it returns?

The answers tell you whether you are getting a short-term fix or a path toward understanding your body better.

None of this requires you to become an expert. It requires someone willing to explain what is happening, so that you can make decisions with clear information instead of guessing in the middle of a flare-up.

Where to Go From Here

If an old injury or a stubborn area keeps reappearing, start by getting curious about it rather than frustrated with it.

Notice when it flares, what you were doing beforehand, and what it was like in the days before. That kind of attention is the beginning of awareness.
